Searching for Awkward Itineraries

I am passionate about air travel. It is a magical, life affirming experience, that allows one to wake up anywhere else in this world 24 hrs later.

I spent some time thinking about online airline flight search last night. It is a highly competitive field with lots of really innovative players, but all of the services I am aware of start with the faulty assumption that people only care about convenience and cost. There are some travelers like myself that prefer flights with long layovers in as many interesting cities as possible, flights that maximize the number of frequent flyer miles earned, and flight itineraries that span multiple days. The customers like me that fly this way are passionate, and spend hours carefully planning their trips. They are frustrated as they try to try and force their use case on systems designed to quickly find the fastest, cheapest ticket between two points.

Does anyone know of a travel search site that is more about the journey than the destination? I wonder how big the market is.
